Job description:

These responsibilities include completing feasibility studies, requirements assessments, and developing and monitoring different water structures (check dams, canal linings, Karez restoration, water supply systems, reservoirs, and so on). Other responsibilities include creating Bills of Quantities (BoQ), drawings, feasibility study reports, and proposals for water infrastructure projects.

Job main responsibilities:

The water supply engineer will do the following to ensure the project’s success:

 Important duties:

  • Create high-quality sub-project proposals for community infrastructure projects, including designs, technical drawings, scopes of work, specifications, cost estimates, bills of quantities, and work plans, in close collaboration with UNDP technical colleagues in the area.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for building projects in the areas, create feasibility study reports, and give technical advice and supervision assistance throughout implementation.
  • In charge of: evaluation, vulnerable recipient selection, project design, execution, and monitoring of construction operations.
  • Hold meetings with community or village elders, Malaks, and other field stakeholders to discuss project choices.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to check the progress and quality of civil engineering projects, ensuring adherence to technical requirements and standards.
  • Work with project teams and stakeholders to create and execute sustainable infrastructure solutions that are consistent with UNDP’s development objectives.
  • Create extensive technical reports and documentation, such as project profiles and status updates, to aid monitoring and assessment activities.
  • Monitor and check on-site civil engineering work, as well as conduct inspection visits.
  • Prepare Bills of Quantities (BoQ), scopes of work, proposals, and infrastructure feasibility assessments for completed tasks. 
  • conducting technical surveys on community infrastructure projects and creating survey reports.
  • Encourage collaboration with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to promote inclusive and participatory approaches to infrastructure construction and maintenance.
  • Implement risk management measures to detect and mitigate possible construction issues.
  • Work with regulatory authorities to guarantee compliance with construction codes, safety laws, and environmental requirements.
  • Participate on field trips, monitor infrastructure activities, and provide technical help to recipients.
  • Consistently observe ongoing construction activities to ensure compliance with the design, specifications, and work schedules.
  • Establish an efficient coordination and network structure with key stakeholders for all project engineering and technical components. 
  • Any additional responsibilities specified by your immediate supervisor.

Job requirements for water supply engineers:

Work experience is required:

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience is required for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in water supply engineering, hydraulic engineering, or civil engineering. Alternatively, candidates with a master’s degree must have at least 1 year of experience.
  • A minimum of 1 year of demonstrated expertise in evaluating water supply construction projects and creating Bills of Quantities, as well as familiarity with the building process.
  • Proficient in critical thinking and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Exceptional communication and reporting skills.
  • Proficiency in both individual work and collaborative teamwork.
  • Profound knowledge and comprehension of the sub-national institutional frameworks in Afghanistan.
  • Prior experience working with UN organizations is advantageous.
  • Prior experience in collaborating with suppliers and managing construction projects.

Skills:

  • Proficient in interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Mastery in verbal and written communication and analytical abilities.
  • Skilled in Auto CAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Projects.
  • Proficient in collaborating with others, initiating tasks independently, and maintaining favorable interpersonal connections, showcasing strong teamwork skills and self-motivation.
  • Displayed a high level of technical skill.
  • Proficient at problem-solving

Language requirement:

  • Mastery in written and spoken English and proficiency in local languages, namely Pashto and Dari, are necessary.
